Match Preview

Real Madrid is set to kick off their 2024-25 La Liga campaign with an away match against Mallorca at Estadi Mallorca Son Moix on Sunday night. Fresh from their UEFA Super Cup victory, Los Blancos, who finished last season 10 points clear of Barcelona, are aiming to start the new season on a high note.

Mallorca, meanwhile, finished 15th in the 2023-24 season, narrowly avoiding relegation by seven points. They are entering their fourth consecutive season in La Liga, their best run at this level since 2013. With a new manager, Jagoba Arrasate, at the helm following his departure from Osasuna, Mallorca is looking to improve on last season's performance.

The Pirates have strengthened their squad with three key signings: Johan Mojica from Villarreal, Takuma Asano, and Mateu Morey on free transfers. However, they’ve lost goalkeeper Predrag Rajkovic to the Saudi Pro League. Historically, Mallorca has struggled against Real Madrid, with only one victory in La Liga since October 2019, which came in February 2023.

Real Madrid enters the match as strong favorites, especially after their UEFA Super Cup triumph where Kylian Mbappe marked his debut with a goal in their 2-0 victory over Atalanta BC. Jude Bellingham also impressed in a deeper midfield role, and the squad looks formidable with new additions like Mbappe and rising star Endrick.

Los Blancos had a mixed pre-season, with losses to AC Milan and Barcelona before a win over Chelsea. Despite a slow start against Atalanta, their second-half performance was convincing, and they’ll be looking to carry that momentum into their La Liga opener.

Last season, Real Madrid was dominant in La Liga, finishing with 95 points, the best attacking (87 goals) and defensive records (26 goals) in the league, and only one loss. They’ll be aiming to replicate that success starting this weekend.

Mallorca will be missing Javi Llabres due to a muscular injury, but the rest of the squad is fit. Arrasate is likely to use a three-man defense, with Mojica set to debut. Asano may partner with Vedat Muriqi in attack.

For Real Madrid, David Alaba is still recovering from an ACL injury, but should return before the end of the year. Eduardo Camavinga, however, will be out for at least six weeks after suffering a knee injury in training. Ancelotti is expected to field the same lineup that won the UEFA Super Cup, with Vinicius Junior, Mbappe, and Rodrygo leading the attack, and Bellingham continuing in midfield.
