Match Preview

London rivals Queens Park Rangers and Tottenham Hotspur are both looking to maintain their perfect pre-season records as they clash in a friendly at Loftus Road on Saturday afternoon.

Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham side returns to England after a dominant 5-1 victory over Hearts, while their Championship hosts, QPR, recently demolished Spanish minnows L'Escala with an astonishing 11-0 win last Thursday. Amidst reports linking Postecoglou to the England manager role, the 58-year-old remained focused on his current team, who showcased an impressive performance against Hearts.

In the Hearts match, Brennan Johnson's early goal was quickly equalized by Lawrence Shankland at the start of the second half. However, Spurs' young talents shone in the latter half, with Mikey Moore, Will Lankshear, Djed Spence, and a Lewis Neilson own goal sealing the win. Postecoglou praised his players' competitiveness and intensity, fielding two different XIs for each half of the game.

Having also scored seven goals against Cambridge United in a behind-closed-doors match, Tottenham's trip to Loftus Road is their final friendly before embarking on an Asian tour, where they will face Vissel Kobe, Team K-League, and Bayern Munich. Bayern will also visit the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on August 10, though it remains uncertain if Harry Kane, who is on a post-Euro 2024 break, will feature in that match.

QPR, meanwhile, concluded their training camp with an 11-0 thrashing of Spanish fifth-tier side L'Escala, with eight different players scoring. Ilias Chair netted a second-half hat-trick in just 33 minutes for Marti Cifuentes's side, who also defeated Santa Coloma 2-0. Cifuentes praised his team's high press during the game, marking QPR's fifth consecutive win across competitive and non-competitive fixtures, following a strong end to the Championship season with three straight victories.

The upcoming match against Tottenham represents the most challenging fixture on QPR's pre-season schedule. They will play their penultimate warm-up game against Reading on July 27, before hosting Brighton & Hove Albion in their final friendly a week later.

Historically frequent opponents, Tottenham and QPR last faced each other competitively in March 2015, with Harry Kane scoring twice to secure a 2-0 win for Spurs. QPR's last victory over Tottenham came in 2012, courtesy of a goal from Adel Taarabt.
